As a wonderful tribute to Fay’s legacy, Alan Brophy, an old friend of hers, has set up the “Fay Purves Scholarship” in 2020 to fund a student to attend Strathclyde University over their four year degree. The Strathclyde University Scholarship Programme supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and aims to help them realise their potential.
Alan met Fay just before she started university in the early 1990’s, and it was Fay who encouraged Alan to leave his electrical apprenticeship and attend Strathclyde University. They both were firm friends throughout their years at University and Alan reflects on those times with fond memories.
In recognition of the inspiration she gave him all those years ago, Alan decided to fund the Fay Purves Sponsorship in 2020, thereby gifting a student with the opportunity to complete a degree at Strathclyde University.
Alan is also a member of Strathclyde University Down South (SUDS), run by and for Strathclyde alumni living in London and the south east. The alumni group organises a number of events for members and graduates, including an annual black-tie Burns Supper. Proceeds from their events, in particular the flagship Burns Supper, also go towards the University’s Scholarship Programme.
