Career

Fay had a varied and interesting career, starting at the Bank of Scotland in 1994 as a university graduate, progressing through various roles within the bank, and eventually moving to self-employment.  Along the way she had involvement in many community organisations and charities, many of which were related to the arts sector, one of her passions. She found herself back at the bank again in the last two years of her working life, finding a good balance between the private sector and her not-for-profit work.

On her LinkedIn page, Fay summarised her later career years like this:

  • Senior Market Researcher with Lloyds Banking Group, March 2016 – July 2018 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom
  • Director, Creative Art Works CIC, Jul 2015 – July 2018 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom
  • Managing Director, What’s Next! Business Consultancy Ltd, February 2009 – July 2018 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom
  • Director, Changeworks, November 2010 – July 2018 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom
  • Director, Artspace2let, January 2009 – July 2018 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom

“Artspace2let is a not-for-profit organisation that arranges the exhibition of art in non-permanent gallery space in Edinburgh. Bank of Scotland

Bank of Scotland 1994 – 2008

Fay’s first job after university was at the Bank of Scotland in Livingston, where she met Brian, who was later to become her husband.  Fay relocated to Edinburgh with the Bank and worked in the Executive office for the Governor in the late 90’s/early 2000’s.  However, she felt that the culture and atmosphere didn’t necessarily suit her in the Executive office – no room for drawing or making things!

Signs Seeds and Woods

One of the first Creative Art Works projects that was involved in was creating new British Sign Language (BSL) signs for trees. This was a project where Fay worked with Academics from the deaf community, BSL interpreters, Forestry specialists and artists to devise the signs. Until this project BSL had only one official sign for a tree and although this was only designed as a pilot project, the signs were adopted into the BSL dictionary.
